Due to the inadvertent delay, you have one extra day to write the exam. It is now due next Thursday 28 October by 5pm. I will be in my office all day (Building 7, Room 306); if, alternately, you want to hand it in early, please put it in my pigeon hole.

Be sure to hand it in by 5pm Thursday as no exams will accepted, without exception.

ACC 1048 Assessment #4 (Final Exam), Mid-term exam (take home)

This assessment is worth 25% of your final grade

This is a take-home exam based on the readings and lectures from weeks five through 12. The exam requires you to answer two questions from Section one and two question from Section two. The exam is due Thursday 28 October. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The exam is marked out of 50 and worth 5% of your final grade.

Section 1 (two answers) is worth 10 marks

Section 2 (two answers) is worth 40 marks

Final exam is worth 50 marks (25% of final grade)

The first section is short answer (75 words) and you must choose two of the four questions. You must define the terms concisely in your own words. Point form is fine. Do not cut and paste from the lecture notes as that will result in a full loss of marks.

The second section is long answer (300 words), and you must choose two of the three questions. For each question write approximately 250 words in essay form (no point form). It is not an essay though, so you do not need a bibliography or footnotes. However, you may deem it useful to reference your source (i.e. In reading X, Y states…). No plagiarism of any kind will be tolerated.

Just as with the first exam, if a question ask for examples to illustrate the theories or concepts covered in the question, you may not use ones found either in the readings or lecture notes. In other words, you must come up with examples on your own, thus demonstrating your understanding of the relevant concepts.

b) Feminism

c) Discourse

d) Analogue/Digital media

Section 2 (Each answer is worth 20 marks)

a) What is semiotics? How does it differ from cultural semiology? Be sure to clarify what is meant by a sign (all its components), connotation and polysemy.

b) How do race and ethnicity relate to media and identity? To answer, draw upon your understanding of semiotics and use the concepts of stereotypes and ‘the Other’.

c) What is Postmodernism? Contrast it to modernism. Be sure to differentiate it from modernity/postmodernity. Finally, give examples of postmodernism in media and culture.

Here is a link to a brief interview with the professor who organized the conference I attended last November in New York City. The main contention is that so much of what we do online is fun but can also be seen as work. In fact, the whole point behind the business plans of any new media corporation (be it Facebook, Twitter, or whatever) is to attract user-generated content. That content i then used in a profitable manner. Hence play as labour. This is an important paradigm for you to understand and I think the interview will help.

CUST 235 Study Group

Nicole Schivas, a student representative with Academic Skills has kindly offered to chair a Study Group. Four students are already participating and I have been asked to extend the invitation to al who are interested.

The Study Group will meet in room A312 in the Gordon Willey Building Monday afternoons from 1300-1400 (just before class). It will run from the Monday back from Reading Week until the week of the exam.

I want to personally thank Nicole (who excelled taking the course last year) for her generous support. At some point later in the semester, I would be happy to attend the meeting if requested.

So if you feel like things are a little unclear and you want further clarification beyond speaking with me, I urge you to attend the Study Group.

Your term papers are not due until March 22nd. However, your outline and sources must be handed in February 8th. That is the last class before Reading Week. Also, be sure to follow MLA style (marks will be subtracted if you do not!).
